PBR bull rider Josh Koschel came down hard at a rodeo on June 4th and sustained a separated shoulder. A shoulder separation occurs when the ligaments connecting the end of the collarbone (clavicle) to the top of the shoulder blade (scapula) stretch or tear due to a trauma or fall. In most cases this injury can repair with time and rest, however, in severe cases, where the ligaments are torn, surgery may be necessary. Also called an acromioclavicular separation, a shoulder separation is not the same as a dislocation, in which the humerus, the large bone in the upper arm, comes out of the shoulder socket and has to be reduced, or manipulated back into place.
Josh Koschel is, by all accounts, a really nice young man. He is currently ranked 13th in the PBR world standings. He is also the creator of one of the two types of spur rowels allowed in PBR competition. We hope that he will recover well and fully and be able to return to competition when the BFTS Tour resumes in Tulsa in a few weeks.
