Names: An Unofficial and Very Small Survey

In the course of judging the Name Your Bull Contest I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time prowling around in the ProBullStats database.  Only names that were not yet in PBS were eligible to win, so I had to check for duplicates.  That led to other name searches that were completely unrelated to the contest.  I have quite a bit of important data to share about that exploration.

There are...

  • Seven pages of names that begin with "big" and eight pages of names that begin with "little."  (Big Dog, Little John, Big Red, Little Bo, Big Jim, Little Wolf, Big Money, Little Cupcake.)
  • Four pages of names beginning with "white" and eleven pages of names beginning with "black."  Ten pages of "red" and five pages of "blue."
  • Two pages each for John, Joe, and Jack.
  • Eleven James Bonds and two James Deans.
  • One Mick Jagger and one Rolling Stone.
  • One page of "good" and four pages of "bad."  Two pages of "cool" and three pages of "hot."
  • Two pages each for fire and water.  Three pages for dirt.
  • Several chicken names, including Chicken on a Chain (of course) and Chicken Fried, Hawk, Bone, Skin, George, Scratch, Louie, Little, and Pox.
  • More names with the word "snot" in them than one would hope:  Snot Rocket, Snot Bubble, Snot Slinger, Snot Shot, and Snot Blower. Enough with that!

I had to stop after a while because it got a little bit addictive.  You start to wonder how many rock and roll names are out there.  How many song titles.  How many names you would hesitate to say in public.  How many bulls with girls' names.  I'll probably do another bout of checking at some point.  For now, I'll just say that I've got a name ready for my bull when I get one, and I'm keeping it a secret.
