Notes from Kansas: Calving Season

Last year's calves on Christmas 2010

M.J. Bonsall of Bonsall Bucking Bulls sends these messages from Kansas as the 2011 calving season begins.

January 8

A bull calf born on 01/05/11 out of Cinderella Cowgirl.com by MudFlap.  A bull calf born on 01/04/11 out of Perfect Water by A-Starbucks.  Both babies are great as born on 40+ degree day and minimal wind.  Both look solid red but I think will brindle.

Moved bred cows (10) from one pasture near barn - and getting ready for a COLD spell.

January 10

Turned really cold yesterday and began snowing last night.  Continues to snow lightly.   Did our best to have all cattle hayed up and windbreaks provided.  Praying for a SHORT winter blast.

January 12

Sunny, cold and to warm up in a day or two.  Used a lot of propane in the propane heater on the water tank out in Mulberry Creek pasture. Holds 100 gallons and probably only lasts 5-7 days in this weather.  But they need to drink semi-warm water.

January 14

Weather turned around to warm up.  I took the week off to be here for the bred cows to watch over them.

Yadah Water and Painted Warrior did NOT get rode at the CBR event at Lebanon, MO. Brad Vogel called and said both did good.  Painted Warrior the same trip - spins like a fan blade.

No new babies.  I'm so thankful none were born during the deep freeze.  It's warming up today:  lower 40s.
